I had a chance to go to a video conference called VidSummit by Derral Eves. Derral Eves is a YouTube and Video marketing consultant with a significant amount of background in social media, mobile, and video marketing.

I was impressed by the number of good speakers he invited to speak at VidSummit. Gary Vaynerchuk, Judy from itsJudysLife and her husband BenjiManTV, Sean Cannell, and Roberto Blake to name a few.

Would You Rather Be Popular or Profitable?

The reason why I went to VidSummit was to learn more about YouTube and creating videos. I’m a firm believer in learning how to get better at our craft. I especially love that this event sparked new ideas and AHA moments.

One of the speakers, Dan Lok, resonated with me with his presentation. His presentation was, “How To Make Big Money From A Small Channel.” He had so many great nuggets, which I’ll be sharing with you below.

But first, let me give you a bit of quick story of what sparked the AHA moment of, “Would you rather be popular or profitable?”

Dan Lok’s a businessman who used YouTube platform for building an audience. He was able to get his channel to 56K subscribers and 3 million views. I thought to myself with those numbers. I bet he was rolling in the money!

He was transparent about his income and showed his income numbers. My jaw dropped with what I saw! It was a few thousand dollars with those numbers.

I was under the impression that YouTube creators made HUGE income with having high viewership from YouTube. Listening to the things that he was sharing, I realized that making money from YouTube, with Google Ad Sense, is just one avenue.

In addition to monetizing on YouTube, it’s a good idea to explore other income streams. This is what sparked my thought of, “Would you rather be popular or profitable?” Don’t get me wrong; there are probably YouTubers that are making a living with just Google Ad Sense.

Here are my takeaways from Dan Lok’s presentation:

  • Youtube, Instagram, and social media are platforms to get noticed. It’s a way to be visible to brands, potential clients, and sharing things you learn with your audience. These platforms help with building an audience and getting noticed but is not a business model.
  • Best thing to do is create a product to sell. Even YouTubers with large numbers have a product to sell. Lara Lee created a palette and T-shirts. Kathleen Lights have nail polishes. Kristen Leanne with Arctic Fox Hair Color. Saphira Howell with her necklaces and clothing line.
  • You can make a good income with small numbers by creating an email list. With an email list, you can let people on your list know when you have a product to sell.  Letting your followers know when you launch a video or things that you want to share with your audience.
